Re-establishment of the OSG is part of the 5th Government initiatives to reform public service with a view of enhancing quality delivery of public service. As such, the establishment of the OSG aimed to provide timely and efficiency handling of all government cases which before that, by virtue of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania, 1977 as amended and the Office of the Attorney General (Discharge of Duties) Act No. 4 of 2005 were entrusted to the Attorney General.
The Government expectations in the establishment of theOSG is that the Office of the OSG will enhance and strengthen the Government ability to litigate civil cases including human rights and constitutional matters in courts of law and undertake arbitral proceedings in tribunals; enhance effective supervision of civil cases in courts of law including human rights and constitutional matters; andwill carry out the general coordination of the conduct of civil litigation and arbitral proceedings on behalf of the Central Government (Ministries, Independent Departments, and Executive Agencies – MDAs) and Local Government Authorities (LGAs).
In undertaking its mandated roles, the OSG will put more emphasis in improving efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of its service in order to remain the Best Law Firm in United Republic of Tanzania. Despite the existing challenges facing the legal sector, there are number of opportunities that if utilized effectively will lead to increased efficiency and quality service.
Having realized the challenges, the most vital task ahead is to strengthen collaboration with our stakeholders mainly being the MDAs, Judicially, Private Advocates and all members of the public etcto improve our style of work. In this regard, we expect to focus more on strengthening capacity to effectively deliver our services, empowerment of our people to undertake well our mandates; timely
The OSG outlines its priorities under its Strategic Plan to be developed in a very near future and we strongly believe that all our important stakeholders will continue to support such initiatives which will go a long way to develop a very vibrant legal industry.
